The western part of the mountain is located on the territory of the commune of Bugarach. Its eastern part is on the territory of Camps-sur-l'Agly.
The geology of the Pic de Bugarach is odd, since its top layers are older than bottom ones. It is not difficult to climb up the Bugarach: a classical route called "voie de la fenêtre" because of a big hole in a cliff, climbs the South face. One may go down via the easiest route, North, and join the "col de Linas"
A small village in France is threatening to call in the army to seal it off from an influx of New Age fanatics who believe it will be the only place on Earth that will be spared if the world ends in 2012.
With a population of only 189, Bugarach sits at the foot of the Pic de Bugarach, the highest mountain in the Corbieres wine-growing area.
The New Agers believe the mountain is one of several "sacred mountains" that is actually an "alien garage" and that extraterrestrials are waiting quietly in a massive cavity beneath the rock, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Some believe that the world will end in December 2012, at which time the aliens will leave. The hope for the New Agers is that they may take a few lucky humans with them back to their planets.
The mayor has told local media that an influx of the New Agers is no laughing matter.
